Becoming an Umpire

We are always looking for new baseball umpires in all areas of the country.

Umpiring can be for anyone, of any age or gender, whether you are a young baseball player, an elite level player looking to stay in the game, a coach looking to get involved in a different aspect of the game, a parent looking to umpire with your son/daughter, an official from another sport looking for a summer officiating option, or anyone else looking for a way to stay active and meet new friends.

Umpiring baseball is a rewarding hobby and part-time job.  Baseball umpires get the best view there is of the game we love!  It's the only way, other than actually playing, to be on the field and part of the game.  You are outdoors during our beautiful Canadian summers, and challenging yourself both mentally and physically.  And especially for younger umpires getting started, it's a great part-time job and a way to earn some money while doing something you love.

If you are considering umpiring, take our short quiz to see if it's right for you!

Frequently Asked Questions

How old do I have to be?

This varies from province to province and association to association.  It also varies based on your individual situation and experience.   In general, 12 years old is a typical age at which many young people begin umpiring.

How do I get started?

Contact the local umpire-in-chief/assignor for your area.  If you don't know who that is, connect with your province's Supervisor of Umpires, who will point you in the right direction.

What training will I receive?

You will attend a Level 1 umpires clinic.  The format varies slightly between provinces, but the clinic is typically a six hour classroom and on-field training program.  You will learn the basics of umpiring, including essential rules, 2-umpire positioning techniques, umpire signals and mechanics.  During the COVID-19 pandemic, online training alternatives are being implemented.

How much will I get paid?

This varies across the country and by level of play.  In general, a beginning umpire might expect to earn $15-$30 for an entry level house league game.  Rates increase with experience and level of play, with highest pay rates in the vicinity of $60-$80 per game, again varying by province and region.
