Identifying Candidates

Key Recruitment Motivations and Strategies

Recruitment campaigns focus on the personal and professional benefits of officiating to attract candidates. Here are the top demographic groups and strategies for recruiting sports officials:

The Top Target Groups:

  • Former and Current Athletes: Roughly 80% of sport officials in Canada are, or were, active as an athlete in the sport they officiate. They already possess a passion for the game, knowledge of the rules, and the desire to give back.
  • High School Students (Juniors/Seniors): Establishing a high school referee program is a highly effective long-term strategy, providing students with part-time employment and building a pipeline of future referees.
  • College/University Students: Local campuses are excellent sources for finding energetic individuals interested in officiating, particularly for intramural leagues.
  • Educators and Teachers: Teachers often make great referees because they are comfortable managing groups, working with children, and often have free time in the summers.
  • Parents and Coaches: People already involved in the league have a vested interest in its success and are often willing to step into a new role to ensure games continue.
  • Active Professionals (with flexible schedules): Recruiting people in professions such as insurance, real estate, or medicine can be effective because they often have control over their daily schedules.

Key Qualities to Look For:

  • Confidence and Decisiveness: The ability to make quick, firm decisions and stand by them is essential.
  • Emotional Control and Poise: Officials must remain calm and, in control of their emotions, even when under high-pressure situations or facing hostile spectators.
  • Integrity and Impartiality: A deep sense of fairness is required to avoid conflicts of interest and maintain unbiased judgment.
  • Communication Skills: The ability to explain rules, discuss infractions, and de-escalate situations with players and coaches.
  • Physical Fitness: Many sports require officials to run, squat, or stand for long periods.
