Why Retain?

There are numerous studies about official’s Recruitment and Retention strategies. Research details reasons for challenges in both recruiting and retaining officials and data supported strategies to combat both. Diverse populations in a sport are more at risk and more likely not to remain if not supported.

It is easier for organizations to retain their officials than recruit. Time, energy and resources are needed to train officials and if your organization is able to retain those officials, the resources can then be utilized to elevate the skill of those officials instead of using them to recruit more officials. Retaining officials allows organizations to further develop their skills to higher levels of proficiency.

Negative Impacts on Retention

  • Abuse of Sports Officials (not the only reason but the largest contributing factor)
  • Impact on Mental Health and Well Being
  • Time pressures
  • Low Pay
  • Not enough support from governing body
  • Not enough support from officials associations
  • Physical requirements
  • Factors that contributed to officials staying in sport as official:
  • Mentoring/Support Systems: Offering guidance to help officials succeed
  • Increased support from governing/organization body
  • Competitive Compensation/Pay
  • Flexible Game Schedules
  • Skill Development: Providing opportunities to gain relevant skills like decision-making, communication, and leadership
  • Positive Environment/Reduced abuse: Creating a supportive, inclusive culture that makes umpires feel valued
  • Clear Communication and Feedback
  • Opportunities for Advancement
  • Recognition Programs: Acknowledging achievements
